I charge $100 for consultation on a statement of purpose, $200 for consultation on a writing sample, or $250 for both.

While I aim to provide the kind of detailed feedback that will enable you to complete your materials on your own, should you develop substantially different drafts during your revision process, I will review subsequent drafts for half price.

What is a “consultation”?

A “consultation” involves three stages. First, I will discuss with you your background and goals for graduate study. This will help me recognize if you have strengths that are not fully coming across in your materials.

Second, I will carefully read your materials and give you very detailed written feedback ranging from their topical focus and organization to their language. My goal is to make you sound like you already are well on your way to thinking like a professional sociologist. There’s no better way to convey that you will be able to think like a sociologist than demonstrating that you already are.

Third, in a follow-up conversation, I will address any questions you have about the feedback and help you strategize what to do next.

This is meant to be a useful service, not a racket. Before taking you on as a client, I will ask for your GPA and GRE scores, and if I think, from those numbers and the overall quality of your writing, that you have no shot at the programs you’re applying to, I will refuse your money. My goal is to help you make the changes that will get you into the school that best suits you. If you’re on the margin where extra help can get you a better funding package, for example, then that extra help may be worth tens of thousands of dollars to you. If you’re not, then it’s worthless.
